Was the 2017 Election a Realigning Election?

Published 12/12/2019

To what extent was the 2017 General Election a realignment within British Politics?

This thesis seeks to help explain the shock 2017 election result. Did the rapid change during the 2017 general election represent a huge shift of voter loyalty or was the election just about voters choosing their best Brexit preference?

The article explores this question using a range of data sources. It focuses on new issues that now dominate British politics and how these issues have brought about electoral change. It also explores the structure of the British political system through identifying the extent party system change has taken place. The study finds that Britain is close to a realignment after the 2017 election result.

Social Capital and Local Government Performance

Published 17/07/2015

Does the level of Social Capital affect the quality of local government performance? A English Case study?

Does the amount of community groups in an area affect the ability for a local government to perform? This study looks at England from 2001 -2010 and answers this question through taking a range of lower tier borough local authorities and comparing their performance indicators against their social capital levels.

The study then plots these findings on a graph to show how social capital levels correlate to Local government performance levels, if at all. The the study finally looks at a local area, South East coast Hastings, and focuses on specific examples of how community groups have interacted with the local council, and in turn how this has affected local government performance.
